Most writers have been asked at least once where we get our ideas.
There’s no one answer.
But there is one truth: ideas are everywhere.
The better question might be: How do I notice the ideas?
Taking time every day to generate creativity is so important. Make it a habit to find ways to express yourself.
That could be writing, but it might be drawing, playing an instrument or any other creative pursuit. It all comes from the same well. If you tap into it regularly it will be easier to draw on it when you really need to.
If you practice stillness and mindfulness, you’ll be more likely to recognise the ideas when they flicker into view.
Also, never stop consuming! Read, watch, listen. Ideas are in everything. You need to soak up as many stories and experiences as possible in order to generate new material of your own.
The more ideas you recognise and explore, the better you’ll get at finding them. It’s a snowball effect!
So don’t worry about generating ideas. Don’t think you have to hunt them down or mine them like diamonds. They’re all around you all the time. You just have to be willing to notice them.
If you’d like to delve deeper into this topic, join our Band of Adventurers for a very special challenge that we’re running in the last week of August. It’s all about exploring ideas.
We hope you’ll join us for what is sure to be a fun and energy-filled writing challenge!
